Phonics : Phase 4 Sounds- Reception
Phase 4 is focussed on applying the sounds taught in previous phases.
The purpose of this phase is to consolidate children’s knowledge of graphemes in reading and spelling words containing adjacent consonants (br, spl) and polysyllabic words (helpdesk, windmill).
Children will be introduced to suffixes. An overview of the phase 4 programme is below. This work will bridge the learning from Reception into Year 1, where htye will review phase 4 at the beginning of their Year 1 phonics curriculum.
